GHS Compliance Training Module for Employees

GHS, or the Globally Harmonized System, is an international standard for classifying and communicating chemical hazards. GHS training teaches workers how to read and understand chemical labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS). OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) requires this training for all employees who handle hazardous chemicals. Failing to comply can lead to penalties of up to $13,653 per violation.

Any employee who handles, uses, or may be exposed to hazardous chemicals must complete GHS training. This includes manufacturing workers, laboratory staff, maintenance and janitorial employees, and even office personnel who may come into contact with cleaning or maintenance chemicals. The training ensures that everyone understands chemical hazards and how to protect themselves at work.

In 2026, OSHA requires employers to update GHS compliance training to reflect the HazCom 2024 Final Rule, which aligns the Hazard Communication Standard with the seventh revision of the Globally Harmonized System (GHS). Employers must continue training workers on label elements and Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), while also covering new pictograms, hazard categories, and labeling changes as soon as those updates take effect. By July 20, 2026, employers must update their hazard communication programs, workplace labeling, and any necessary employee training for substances. Staying informed about rule changes ensures continued compliance.

Every GHS-compliant label must include:

• A product identifier
• Supplier identification
• A signal word such as “Danger” or “Warning”
• Hazard statements describing risks
• Pictograms that show hazard types
• Precautionary statements
• Any additional supplemental information

Employers must verify that all supplier labels meet these requirements and that secondary containers used in the workplace are also clearly and correctly labeled.

They must also ensure that all containers are properly labeled, SDSs are easily accessible, and regular audits are conducted. Using visual aids and job reminders helps reinforce employee understanding and compliance.
