The Los Angeles City Council has voted with a lone naysayer to raise the minimum wage in the city to $15 an hour in 2020, joining other major cities like San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Seattle and New York City.
Like the other municipalities, Los Angeles will raise its minimum wage in steps, going up to $10.50 in July 2016, and then each succeeding July to $12, then $13.25, $14.25 and finally $15. The $15-an-hour rate equates to an annual salary of $31,200.
Mayor Eric Garcetti has signaled that he will sign the ordinance.
