HHS Releases Obamacare Enrollment Tallies

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today released end-of-month enrollment figures for the rollout of Obamacare on Oct. 1, saying that 26,794 Americans had purchased a private insurance plan on HealthCare.gov, the federal marketplace, with an additional 79,391 doing so on the state exchanges.

The announced goal for sign-ups under the just-rolled-out Affordable Care Act (ACA) state and federal marketplaces is 7 million by the end of the enrollment period on March 31.

HHS reported that there were 846,184 competed applications in the state and federal marketplaces for plans that would cover a total of 1,509,883 Americans. It said 1,081,592 people had been “determined eligible to enroll in a marketplace plan.” It blamed poor website functionality for the low enrollment figures and said it expected a late swell in enrollments.

Republicans insisted there was no way the administration could reach its goal by the end of March.
