EEO-1 Data Collection Deadline Extension Announced

After delaying the EEO-1 data collection deadline in June, the EEOC has announced another data collection deadline extension. Previously, the deadline for submitting both the 2019 and 2020 EEO-1 Component 1 data was August 23rd, 2021. However, on August 23, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) moved the deadline to October 25th, 2021.

Previous Updates to EEO-1 Data Collection

On May 8th, 2020, the EEOC delayed opening the 2019 EEO-1 Component 1 Data Collection site due to the pandemic. Subsequently, in April 2021, the agency announced that the collection site was open for both 2019 and 2020 data. However, at that time, the EEO-1 Data Collection deadline to submit data for both years was July 19th, 2021. Since then, however, the EEOC has twice postponed the new deadline date to accommodate business owners during this time.

Overview of the EEO-1 Data Collection Deadline Extension

Meanwhile, as the pandemic continues, the EEOC recognizes the differential impacts on workplaces nationwide. Given that and the need to submit two years of data, the EEOC moved the deadline from August to October. Employers, however, should begin preparing now to submit their data by the October 25 filing deadline. The EEOC explicitly notes that the data collection deadline extension date is the final deadline in its latest press release. Consequently, the agency will make no additional updates to the filing deadline.

Background of the Mandatory EEO-Component 1 Report

In brief, the EEO-1 Component 1 Report is an annual data collection that requires specific employers to submit workforce data. On the whole, all private-sector employers with 100 or more employees complete the report.  Federal contractors with 50 or more employees meeting specific criteria also are responsible for completing the report. Specifically, the report asks for employee information, including demographics by race/ethnicity, sex, and job categories. Finally, eligible employers that have not received an EEO-1 letter via mail should contact the EEOC’s Filer Support Team.  However, employers still need to meet the October 25 EEO-1 data collection deadline even with these possible issues.
