Congress rode to the aid of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans with an increased package of benefits at the close of 2010's lame duck session. The benefits will facilitate educational pursuits for the veterans, among other initiatives.
At the same time, Congress by voice vote passed a resolution to extend USERRA benefits to people working on Capitol Hill (with a few exceptions). Previously, Congress had exempted its domain from the job-protecting provisions of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act.
Under USERRA, employers must grand unpaid military leave to employees called into active or inactive duty. Upon their return to work, these employees must be restored to their previous positions or the equivalent.
Subsequent to the passage of USERRA, the Veterans Employment and Training Service (VETS) of the Department of Labor (DOL) issued a mandatory poster, which is now part of Personnel Concepts' series of Space Saver-1 All-On-One State and Federal Labor Law Posters.
