A new California law, Senate Bill 553, requires most California businesses to implement a written Workplace Violence Prevention Plan beginning July 1st, 2024. The new law establishes Section 6401.9 of the California Labor Code, which contains the new requirement. Affected businesses include:

  • Businesses with 10 or more employees on payroll
  • Businesses of any size that are open to the public

Additionally, healthcare entities were previously required to implement a written prevention plan under Title 8, Section 3342.
